Graduate Opportunities

We offer graduate programmes built around you becoming the complete professional. You’ll gain unrivalled experience through varied placements; impact diverse projects (some which are the biggest engineering projects in Europe); personally control the pace of your chosen specialism and develop your skills within our ever-changing environment.

As we are a diverse national organisation, you’ll need the flexibility to travel around the country and may even potentially be based in different cities depending on your individual placements.

All graduates programmes start in either September or November with a structured and intensive induction held at our purpose built Training Centre in Coventry, Westwood.

In whichever discipline you join us, and whatever location you work, yours will truly be a job worth doing. Click on the relevant discipline from the menu to the left to find more about what you can expect from your programme.

Engineering

Our structured, accredited Engineering programmes offer a mixture of personal skills training, technical tuition and work-based placements that allow you to get hands on experience of the railway. Throughout the programme you can expect to have a mentor (a senior engineer), as well as support from the graduate development team.

Because we want our engineering graduates to have a broad overview of all aspects of the business, the programme is made up of placements in different technical spheres. This is complemented by specialist technical training in telecoms, electrification and plant, signalling or track according to individual choice. You will also participate in a series of graduate master classes that provide an introduction to the basic principles of management. And you’ll have lots of opportunities to talk to and work with different people across the company, and importantly, you’ll be working on real projects.

Management

After an intensive induction programme at our leadership and development centre, Westwood, you’ll participate in a series of placements in specific parts of the business – either Project Management in the Infrastructure and Investment division, Operations and Customer Service, Commercial Property, Finance, Contracts and Procurement or Information Management.

After your placements, you’ll move into your first appointment before your next career move is agreed – after that, the opportunities are endless. Previous graduates are now Duty Station Managers, Maintenance Delivery Unit Managers, Commercial Analysts, Portfolio Surveyors, Local Operations Managers and Project Managers, and are in countless other managerial roles, while others are in head office roles working in marketing and HR.
